Double XP Weekend IRL

When Jesus apparently died all those years ago and rose from the dead, I doubt that his real intentions would be for us to have a 4 day bank holiday weekend and use it as an excuse to overindulge in alcohol and chocolate egg consumption – but here we are. The 4 day weekend still messes with my head in terms of time – it is Sunday night right now but I feel like I’ve already had my weekend, but with tomorrow off as well I don’t feel the urgency to go to bed, even though I’m still up early on my day off. This is further compounded by the…

Black Summer (2019) – Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️ With Netflix recently releasing a slew of “Netflix Adaptation” productions, you can be forgiven for thinking that Black Summer is simply a knock off version of The Walking Dead and you’d be right – but somehow, it has managed to stand out. It isn’t amazing, but it isn’t zombie shit either. Black Summer is effectively roughly Season 1 of The Walking Dead in spirit – it starts roughly 6 weeks into the Zombie Apocalypse with areas of America wiped off the map and classed as Black Zones where there are no humans, only zombies. At there very start, a military checkpoint gets overrun when Rose’s husband tries to follow…

Getting It In Good, Losing, Rinse & Repeat

An aspect of poker that I struggle with is the idea of getting my chips in with the best hand and getting outdrawn… mainly because I have gotten it in good with the best hand and still been sucked out on time after time after time and each time it happens I feel a piece of me soul die and never return. So now, whenever I get called and I turn over my hand, I already know that if its pair over pair that they will hit their set or if its AK vs AQ they will spike the Queen – it is a horrible mindset to be in but…

The Mandalorian Unveiled

As a consumer, I am one of those people who fall heavily into the category of fans who will only really invest in main series entries of any franchise and rarely touch spin off material.  I love Harry Potter, but I won’t read any of the school books or Pottermore. I love Marvel, but I don’t read any alternate universe or what if material. I love Kingdom Hearts, but I hate the spin off games. Lastly, I love Star Wars – but I haven’t read any of the books and after Disney denied the canon, I don’t ever plan to. However, when “The Mandalorian” was teased some time ago I…

The Silence (2019) – Review

⭐️⭐️ Originally, I didn’t like the sound of The Silence as I’d recently watched The Quiet Place (of which the film shares many similarities) but I like Stanley Tucci and Kiernan Shipka was running hot from the Chilling Tales of Sabrina, so I decided to give it a go. First impressions seemed reasonable, the premise was that a horde of unknown monsters had appeared and were attracted to sound – that I can get behind. The family which included a girl with a sound-related disability had to find shelter somewhere and stay as quiet as possible to survive – OK starting to sound a bit familiar now. They then endure…

Preparation For Vegas

In August this year, I’m going to be embarking on a holiday of my dreams… a week in Las Vegas with my friends in a luxury villa off the main strip with dreams of making some money and avoiding being fried to death in the Nevada desert sun. But before I go, I need to put some solid hours in getting properly back up to speed on my poker game. I’ve played odd tournaments here and there over the last couple of months but not consistently – mainly because I get my chips in good and fly into raging monkey tilt when I get beaten by the worst hand. In…

One Punch Man Returns

When One Punch Man first hit our screens in October 2015, the Internet didn’t know what to do with itself. For someone like myself who up to that point only had a passive interest in the anime genre, it was exactly what I wanted – a reasonably short season, a gorgeous style, comedy in droves and a sales pitch that was so absurd it had no excuse to not succeed. I didn’t have the time to become invested in a show that had episodes that ventured into triple digits and any “serious” anime was not something I craved whatsoever – One Punch Man checked every box. I won’t lie, I’ve…

Winter Has Finally Arrived

Game of Thrones, arguably the most highly anticipated and successful TV drama of all time, is finally coming to an end. After the end of Season 7 and the news that due to weather and filming constraints the final season would be 2 years down the line surfaced, it feels surreal that those 2 years have passed, and the end is nigh for the inhabitants of Westeros. I first discovered Game of Thrones in the same vain as Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead – the show was deep into its 4th season and I had no interest in watching it whatsoever, a mistake I’ve made almost continuously in my…

First Step is the Hardest

I decided a few weeks ago that I would make a blog, but I had no idea what it would be about. I toyed with the idea of it being targeted towards a specific interest of mine such as geek culture, gaming or gambling, but I couldn’t commit to a single theme. In some regards I feel like if I did commit to a single genre, then the blog itself would feel like a job – I’d be waiting for specific news in that field to post about and that doesn’t leave any room for anything else. Instead I’ve decided that I just wanted a bit of space on the…
